Greg Johns

Husband and Father, motorcycle driver, quality control at autoparts manufacturer

Greg Johns was young, only 51, when he urinated blood one day. Though most kidney tumors don’t cause any symptoms, blood in the urine is something that you should definitely get evaluated by a doctor.

In his own words, “My one and only symptom started with me urinating bright red blood and knowing that something was seriously wrong. Fast forward to having a CT scan ordered by my urologist in my town where I live. It was disturbing when he showed me the picture of this giant tumor on my right kidney. Also I had a great amount of relief when he showed me the picture of my one healthy kidney and gave me a ray of hope. Due to the size of the tumor and the fact that it grew close to my heart , my urologist, who was a friend of Dr Campbell, referred me to the Cleveland Clinic, because it was the only place where I had the best chance to survive the surgery. Dr Campbell came back early from his vacation to see me. Three weeks after testing at the clinic, I was in surgery, and Dr Weight was my surgeon. After surgery, I was told that the tumor never attached itself to the inside of my vein or any of my other organs. I have been working with a nutritionist who through extensive bloodwork, recommends the diet and supplements that my body needs to stay healthy and also improves my overall health. I am so fortunate that my wife has also studied nutrition and proper diet, to cook and support us both with healthy eating. When I woke up in the recovery room, I already physically felt better than I did before I was operated on. After surgery I was on a really fast upward trajectory with the way I physically felt, and the speed at which I was healing both physically and mentally and spiritually. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Drs Weight and Campbell, and the whole team at the clinic for their expertise and experience that they brought to my case.

Greg’s advice for other cancer patients

Keep a positive attitude even when you are at your lowest point. Take care of your body and mind. They are both equally important.

Who does Greg want to thank in his kidney cancer journey?

My wife who has supported me and guided me on healthy eating and herbs and supplements. My mom Linda who was with me through all my pre and post surgery testing and with me during my post surgery stay in the hospital.
