Loss, Love, and Family

Last year, I lost my beloved wife Pat to lung cancer. Pat had been an RN, and years ago, when I was in a horrific car accident that cost me my left leg and required my other leg to be rebuilt, it was Pat who made sure I could rehab at home. With her help, I was walking again on a prosthetic leg within months.

Losing her left a hole in my heart, but my children and grandchildren have been my anchors. All three of my children live within 15 miles, as do most of my grandchildren. They are my rocks, keeping me busy and supported through every challenge. And staying busy has been one of my greatest blessings—I don’t dwell on the cancer because there’s simply too much life still to live.

Surgery and Hope

On July 13, 2023, I was officially diagnosed with kidney cancer. Just over a month later, on August 19th, I underwent surgery with Dr. Chris Weight and his team, who removed my kidney, the tumor, and surrounding lymph nodes. By September 2nd, I had my follow-up appointment, where Dr. Weight shared the newsl: the cancer had not spread to the lymph nodes. As of now, I am cancer free. To go from diagnosis to surgery to healing in less than two months is a blessing I do not take for granted.

Advice for Others

Everyone’s journey with kidney cancer is different—different diagnoses, different emotions, different support systems. But one thing I believe is true for everyone: God is there to provide the support you need, in the way you need it.

My advice is simple: pray. Pray for guidance, pray for strength, and pray that you find the right doctors. Then, trust them to do their job. Lean on your faith, your family, and your community. With the right support, you can get through even the most difficult times.

Moving Forward

I am grateful—for my doctors, for my family, for the prayers of so many people, and for the Lord’s steady hand guiding me. My story is one of faith, resilience, and the power of community.

God bless and prayers for you all.
