Jeffrey was following up for his annual physical with his primary care physician and they noted microscopic hematuria in his urine. Or another way of saying this, he had blood that could only be seen under a microscope. Fortunately his doctor was up to date on the most current recommendations and recommended that he consult with a urologist for evaluation.
A work up for blood in the urine usually means evaluating the organs that make urine (the kidneys), and the organs that transport and store urine (ureters, urethra and bladder). The workup is completed with a cystoscopy, and a scan of the kidneys. Jeffrey’s bladder and urethra were normal, but then he needed to get a CT scan of the kidneys. This showed two tumors and a cyst in the right kidney. (See below).
Though Jeffrey lives in North Carolina, he had a good friend at the Cleveland Clinic and came hoping to have his kidney spared, even though he had two tumors in the same kidney. These two kidney tumors were removed at Cleveland Clinic with a robotic partial nephrectomy. He turned out to have a very rare type called Clear Cell Papillary Kidney Tumor. These rare tumors are not known to metastasize, therefore Jeffrey has a very good prognosis
