When Joel walked into a room, you instantly felt it. He was the kind of person who made sure you knew—without a shadow of a doubt—that you were loved. Wrapped in a sharp sense of humor, a competitive spirit, and an undeniable warmth, Joel had a rare superpower: he made people feel less alone.
Diagnosed with stage IV renal cell carcinoma in the fall of 2020 and given a daunting prognosis, Joel chose to turn an impossible situation into a masterclass in living fully.
Loving, Funny, and Undeniably Resilient Joel’s resilience wasn't just about surviving; it was about how he chose to live alongside his diagnosis. He was a devoted husband to Donna, the best dad in the world to his three daughters—Brittany, Amanda, and Taylor—and a legendary "Papa" to his three grandsons, Aidan, Ollie, and Lucas. Some of the family’s favorite memories capture him at his happiest in Marco Island, Florida, running along the beach and splashing into the pool with his grandsons.
Beyond his family, Joel was a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan (loyal through every winning and losing season) and a fiercely competitive tennis player who brought that same fire to family game nights.
Turning Personal Battle into Public Advocacy Rather than letting cancer define his world, Joel expanded it to lift up others. He became a beacon, educator, and source of hope for the entire kidney cancer community:
Board Leadership: Served on the Board of Directors for the Kidney Cancer Association and the Judy Nicholson Foundation.
Community Building: Helped found a thriving Facebook community to connect, support, and uplift patients and families navigating the same path.
Author & Speaker: Authored his 2025 book, My Journey with Stage IV Renal Cell Carcinoma: How to Make the Most of a Dire Diagnosis, sharing his wisdom to help others find strength in dark times.
A Legacy to Carry to the Summit Joel often reminded those around him that "Life is a marathon, not a sprint." He believed deeply in the legacy we leave behind, and he lived out his favorite mantras every single day: live in the present and enjoy every moment.
As our climbers reach the summit and look out over the peak, we celebrate Joel—the warrior, the advocate, the jokester, and the light in dark times. We carry his story up the mountain to honor a man who proved that even in the face of life’s greatest obstacles, you can always choose love, laughter, and relentless hope.
