We climbed Citlaltépetl for Mark!
In Memory of Mark
Mark was diagnosed with kidney cancer at the age of 54. His journey began when he noticed a symptom that led to his diagnosis. Throughout his fight, Mark underwent multiple treatments, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy/immunotherapy, and alternative therapies such as acupuncture and faith-based healing. Despite his perseverance, his disease progressed over time.
When Mark first learned of his diagnosis, fear was his immediate reaction—but he faced each challenge with courage and determination. He was deeply devoted to his work as a teacher, helping high school dropouts earn their GEDs, and he treasured his personal passions. In his free time, Mark loved spending time with his children, hiking with his German Shepherd, reading—especially about history—watching movies, traveling when his health allowed, and enjoying coffee by the fire with friends and family.
Mark’s journey was supported by those who stood by him through every step: his spouse Elise, fellow kidney cancer survivor Lyle Pratt, and Dr. Hans Hammers. He shared his experiences openly, including his treatments like IL-2 therapy, inspiring others with his resilience and honesty.
While Mark was alive, we honored his kidney cancer journey by dedicating our climb of Citlaltépetl in his name.
To anyone newly diagnosed with kidney cancer, Mark’s advice was simple yet powerful: see a renal cell carcinoma (RCC) specialist, and don’t hesitate to seek a second—or even third—opinion.
Mark’s life and legacy remain a testament to courage, love, and the importance of community. We honor his memory and the strength he showed throughout his journey.
