Faith, Family, and Fortitude: Myrtle’s Journey with Kidney Cancer
When Myrtle (age 67) first heard the words “you have cancer,” disbelief washed over him. It wasn’t something he ever expected to hear — especially since the diagnosis came by accident.
“I couldn’t believe it,” he recalls. “They found it on a scan that wasn’t even meant to look for cancer.”
A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
What began as a routine scan turned into a life-changing discovery. In February, doctors told Myrtle that he had kidney cancer — and it had already started to affect other areas of his body. Over the following months, he endured a series of major surgeries, including procedures on his humerus, femur, and a full nephrectomy to remove his affected kidney.
It was a difficult, painful road, but Myrtle faced each step with courage, determination, and faith.
Faith as the Foundation
Throughout his treatment, Myrtle leaned heavily on his faith in Jesus to carry him through.
“What has helped me through the surgeries and off days is my faith and trust in Jesus,” he says. “It has also helped to have an amazing medical team. When I met Dr. Weight, I knew I was in good hands. He was very encouraging and sympathetic toward my needs.”
Even on the hardest days — when pain and fatigue set in — prayer and trust gave him peace and strength.
The Power of Family and Support
Myrtle’s journey hasn’t been one he’s walked alone. His wife, daughters, and close friends have been by his side every step of the way — helping with appointments, lifting his spirits, and keeping him focused on recovery. Their love has been a constant reminder that he’s never alone in this fight.
Finding Balance in the Outdoors
Outside of treatment, Myrtle finds joy in returning to the things that make him feel alive — hunting and fishing. Being outdoors reminds him of the beauty of life, the patience it takes to heal, and the reward that comes from perseverance.
While his scans still show a few stable spots, his disease is under control — not growing, not spreading. For Myrtle, that’s something to celebrate.
Words of Hope
Though he never asked to become a cancer warrior, Myrtle’s story is one of courage and faith — a testament to staying grounded when life feels uncertain. His message to others newly diagnosed is one of encouragement and hope:
“Lean on your faith, your doctors, and the people who love you. You can get through this.”
Looking Ahead
Today, Myrtle continues his treatment and recovery with a renewed outlook on life. Each day, he focuses on gratitude — for his family, for his faith, and for every moment he’s given.
