Richard Andersen: An Unexpected Discovery and a New Outlook on Life
For Richard Andersen, life at 71 was meant to be about enjoying retirement — time to travel, spend time with family, and take in the rewards of years of hard work. But during a hospital visit for an unrelated health issue, everything changed.
It started with a bleeding ulcer that led doctors to order a series of scans and X-rays. In the process, they discovered something completely unexpected — a tumor on his kidney.
“It was an accident,” Richard recalls. “I had a CT scan for another reason, and they found the cancer.”
Those three words — “you have cancer” — can turn anyone’s world upside down. For Richard, his first reaction was simple and deeply human:
“Oh no.”
A Life-Saving Discovery
Because the cancer was found by accident, doctors were able to act quickly. Richard underwent surgery to remove the affected kidney, a procedure that can be curative when the cancer is caught early and contained.
Today, Richard is grateful to say he is cancer-free — NED (No Evidence of Disease). His story is a powerful reminder of how early detection can save lives.
“I’m thankful they found it when they did,” he says.
A Grateful Heart and an Adventurous Spirit
Now back to enjoying retirement, Richard spends his time doing what he loves most — traveling and making new memories with his family, who supported him through every step of his journey.
“Family means everything,” he says. “They helped me stay positive and focused on recovery.”
For Richard, kidney cancer is no longer a daily worry. Instead, it’s a reminder to cherish each day and to appreciate the chance to explore the world again with renewed gratitude.
Words of Advice for Others
When asked what he’d tell someone newly diagnosed with kidney cancer, Richard’s message is clear and simple:
“Early detection.”
Routine scans, checkups, and listening to your body can make all the difference — especially since kidney cancer often develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages.
A Story of Hope
Richard’s journey highlights one of the most important lessons in the fight against kidney cancer: sometimes, luck, timing, and vigilance combine to make all the difference. His story serves as both a warning and a message of hope — that even when cancer appears without warning, it can be defeated with early action, good care, and the support of loved ones.
