Still Climbing: Ryan’s Journey Through Kidney Cancer

A Life Changed in an Instant

When Ryan first heard the words “You have kidney cancer,” shock was the only word that fit. How could this happen to me?

An Information Technology professional who loved biking, exploring parks, and taking long drives, Ryan never imagined how drastically life would change. In 2014, after months of fatigue and recurring pain, a sudden episode of severe bleeding led to a devastating diagnosis — a kidney completely overtaken by cancer, along with tumors in his brain, stomach, and lungs.

The Power of Support

Two people became Ryan’s pillars of strength during his journey.
His girlfriend, Heather — now his wife — used her experience as a urology nurse to comfort and guide him through every fear and decision. Her compassion and knowledge gave Ryan reassurance when everything felt uncertain.

His boss, Cloy, also played a key role. Despite Ryan being a new temporary employee, Cloy stood by him instead of letting him go, ensuring he had the stability and insurance coverage needed to face his diagnosis head-on.

Enduring the Climb

Ryan’s treatment journey was intense — brain surgery, kidney removal, and endless scans and medications. He endured seizures, physical setbacks, and exhausting side effects. But through it all, the care teams at the University of Minnesota and the support of his loved ones gave him renewed hope and strength to keep fighting.

A Financial Battle Won

While fighting cancer, Ryan also faced another uphill battle — medical bills totaling more than $300,000. After months of appeals, letters, and persistence, a compassionate team at the University of Minnesota helped him advocate for himself. Eventually, the insurance company reversed its decision and covered his treatments in full, lifting a $75,000 personal burden.

Still Climbing Forward

More than a decade later, Ryan’s journey continues. Though the road hasn’t been easy — from changing medications to managing the effects of COVID-19 on his remaining kidney — he keeps pushing forward.

Today, Ryan mentors other patients just beginning their kidney cancer journeys and continues to participate in Climb 4 Kidney Cancer events alongside Heather, celebrating resilience, community, and hope with every step.

“It hasn’t been an easy climb, but I’m still hanging in there — and still climbing.”
