Phi Nguyen: Finding Strength Through Family and Faith
For Phi Nguyen, life revolved around family, food, and laughter. A devoted mother of four, a proud grandmother, and a talented cook, she poured love into everything she made — from home-cooked meals to weekend adventures with her children and siblings.
She never imagined that a routine hospital visit for a stomachache would change her life forever.
An Unexpected Diagnosis
It started with persistent stomach pain that grew worse over time. Concerned, Phi’s family took her to the emergency room. Doctors discovered inflammation in her gallbladder — but they also noticed suspicious spots on her right kidney.
Unsure of what they were seeing, the medical team transferred her to University Fairview Hospital for more advanced testing. There, after another round of scans, came the news no one was prepared for: Phi had kidney cancer.
Her doctors explained that her cancer was rare and unusual. Within two weeks, Phi underwent a six-hour surgery to remove the tumor.
“She said it was the worst time in her life — a disease she never imagined and a surgery longer than she ever thought possible,” her family shared.
A Difficult Recovery, A Powerful Resolve
The weeks after surgery were filled with exhaustion and uncertainty. Phi felt overwhelmed — sad, anxious, and helpless. For someone who had always cared for others, being the one who needed care was difficult.
But as she looked around at her parents, siblings, and four children, she realized how much love surrounded her. That love gave her the strength to keep fighting.
“Because of her kids and her whole family, she told herself to get better,” her daughter said. “She stopped thinking about the cancer and started doing things that make her smile again.”
Phi began walking, cooking, and spending time with her granddaughter — the small joys that helped her regain her sense of self. With the help of her doctors, nurses, and family, she continues to heal and grow stronger each day.
A Family’s Love, a Fighter’s Spirit
Phi’s journey is one of resilience and hope, powered by the unwavering support of her large and loving family. Together, they travel when they can — exploring their home state of Minnesota and making new memories in other parts of the country.
“She loves to cook for her family, hang out with her parents and siblings, and travel whenever we have time off,” her children said. “We love to take her places and keep her smiling.”
Though her cancer journey is ongoing, Phi chooses to focus on joy and gratitude. Her story is a reminder that the heart of healing often lies in the strength of family and the courage to keep living fully.
Phi’s Advice to Others Facing Kidney Cancer
